  • In the world of hair styling tools, there are dryers, curling irons, flat irons and various hybrids. We thought we'd seen it all. That is, until the Dyson Airwrap arrived on the scene and took the at-home styling industry by storm; it's the ultimate multitasking hair tool.

The Airwrap is a combined hair dryer and styler designed to work on damp hair, drying and setting the style while minimizing damage with less heat than typical styling tools. It works on various hair types and offers versatile styling options. The latest model includes six attachments: a smoothing dryer, two barrel sizes for curls, two smoothing brushes and a volumizing brush. Our only gripe? The cost. This coveted tool retails for $599, making it out of reach for many. But that's where we come in. We gathered the top Airwrap alternatives that achieve beautiful blowouts and hairstyles at more affordable price points.

Before you start styling, it's important to protect your strands from heat damage. Check out our favorite heat protectant products and also our guides to the best curling wands and travel hair dryers for even more top-tested styling tools.

    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (11)Dries and styles hair at once
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (12)Less hair damage potential
    Cons
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (13)Pricey
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (14)Takes time to learn how to use properly

Meet the original all-in-one styling tool. Dyson's original Airwrap launched in 2018 and started the multitasking tool phenomenon with its ability to dry and style hair (either straight, wavy or curly) with just one base and six interchangeable attachments. It was the first hair tool to utilize the "coanda effect" which wraps your hair around the barrel automatically with air. A newer version launched in 2022 with updated attachments and the Airwrap i.d. came out in 2024 with new attachments and Bluetooth enabled technology.

The best part is that it saves time and can help reduce damage with its low temperature maximum, which is far cooler and therefore less damaging than a flat iron or curling iron. The catch: the hefty price tag. At $599, this is a major splurge for most. Plus, there is a definitely a learning curve when using the tool at first.

TESTER NOTES: One analysis done at the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab showed that the original Airwrap with the round brush attachment reached around 158ºF; most flat irons and curling irons reach temperatures of over 350ºF. And according to additional Lab testing, some of the newer attachments reach lower temps, meaning even less damage potential than the original.

A GH Beauty Award winner, Shark Beauty's sleek tool is a hairdryer, hairdryer brush and curler in one, with five attachments including brushes, curlers, a concentrator and a diffuser. In Beauty Lab testing, it reached a high air temperature, had strong airflow and dried hair samples in almost record time. Plus, the handle is extremely versatile and can twist 90 degrees, making it easy to use for different styling needs.

The main differences between Shark and Dyson: a few reviewers noted that the Shark is a little noisier, can get hotter, and round and flat brushes can generate more tension during styling.

TESTER NOTES: "There are an impressive number of attachments available; I especially like that they offer tools for curly and textured hair like a diffuser and a wide tooth comb for stretching coily hair," says Chiara Butler, a reviews analyst in the GH Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab. "It also has a flyaway taming attachment, but I personally felt that it could get too hot." Butler also notes that the base price only includes three attachments, so keep that in mind when shopping. Plus, "the Shark sounds a bit higher pitched and harsher than the other tools I tried," she adds.

Another reviewer also liked the ease of use and options among the attachments: "It’s proven versatile enough to see me through two different haircuts and I like the easy on-and-off of all of the attachments," one reviewer says.

After noting that is has over 487,000 Amazon reviews, the GH Beauty Lab had to put Revlon's One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer to the test. The hype is true: It achieved the fastest rate of drying hair compared to the other tools we tried. It does get super hot though, so keep that in mind.

The brush has an oval, cylindrical shape that smooths hair and can glide through even coarse hair without pulling or tugging. Our testing also revealed that it boosts shine and the included instructions are easy to follow. Our experts note, however, that depending on one's hair texture and length, one may not be able to achieve the variety of hair styles that one can easily achieve with the Dyson Airwrap.

TESTER NOTES: “I liked how the brush head was large, which allowed it to dry more hair at once,” a tester reported. “It was good for creating smooth, straight hairstyles.”

    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (34)Has a long cord and wrap for storage
    Cons
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (35)No cool shot setting

Coming in hot (pun intended) as our top pick for hair dryer brushes in the Lab, 100% of testers agreed this brush was best for creating perfect style and volume on all hair types. Testers loved that it was easy to hold, creates fullness and has gentle heat (read: less damage potential).

It was ranked the quietest hair dryer brush, has a long cord and was the only winner with a wrap for storage. The only negative? It does not include a cool setting to set your style quickly. Similar to Revlon, this tool excels in achieving voluminous blowouts but may not be as straightforward to get the variety of hairstyles as with the Dyson or Shark.

TESTER NOTES: "I liked that they use two types of bristles (short and long) as it grabbed the strands of hair and glided through," said one user.

Thick, coarse hair can be a challenge to blow out and straighten. This brush dryer from Hot Tools, which contains a rotating temperature control, three heat settings and vent platforms, proved to style dense, coarse or curly strands quickly and efficiently in our Beauty Lab evaluation.

It is on the heavier side so keep that in mind before using. Also, it may not be as straightforward to achieve the variety of hairstyles one can create with the Dyson or Shark.

TESTER NOTES: 100% of expert testers found that it styled hair fast and combed through strands with ease. Reviewers also liked that the controls were the simplest to use compared with the other models. “I was surprised by the speed and how fast my hair went from wet to dry,” a user commented.

    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (47)Not as effective for thick hair
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (48)Cool shot not powerful

Finally, a hair dryer brush tool that can help prevent damage to fine hair! Our Beauty Lab evaluations revealed that Drybar's hair dryer brush has the gentlest heat among the products we tested, preventing hair from getting overly exposed to heat while still styling hair effectively. It reaches a maximum temperature of 167°F over five minutes of use, which is nearly 100ºF lower than the competition.

The brush has a narrow barrel, which is perfect for fine or shorter hair and is super lightweight (less than a pound!), making it easy to hold and use. While it works wonders on thin or short hair, this brush may not be ideal for thicker hair textures and it's not as versatile as some of the other tools on this list.

TESTER NOTES: “I got great volume with this, yet my hair felt really smooth — it was comparable to a blow-out from a salon,” one user raved.

    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (54)Only creates curly and wavy styles on already dry hair

The name says it all: this GH Beauty Award winner creates the ultimate soft, beachy waves and (bonus!) does the work for you. The automated curling barrel twirls your hair around the barrel, taking away the guesswork and sometimes inconsistency of using a regular curling iron.

While it creates curls like a pro, it doesn't have the style options of the Airwrap or some other dupes. It's designed to be used on dry hair, so you need to either air dry or blow dry your hair first. And there is a learning curve (just like many other tools) but once you get it, it's super simple.

TESTER NOTES: "I can curl all of my hair in less than five minutes with this curling iron — a total game-changer. It makes getting the perfect waves almost effortless," says GH Beauty Director April Franzino.

    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (58)Extra-long curling barrels
    Cons
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (59)Cool shot is not super effective

Boasting a zero heat damage claim based on a third-party study, T3's newest tool uses their Aire 360 Technology and extra-long ceramic curling attachments to create bouncy blowouts, waves and curls.

The biggest difference between this tool and Dyson's is that while Dyson's curling barrels are plastic, T3's are covered in a ceramic coated called CeraGloss. It comes with four attachments: a dryer concentrator, oval brush and right and left curling barrels, all of which pair easily with the base that (bonus!) contains a smart microchip for digital heat control.

TESTER NOTES: When using the tool, Butler noticed that the barrel retained a lot of heat "so even when I activated the cool shot, my hair on the barrel still felt very warm." While the ceramic coating may help the barrel get hotter faster, Butler felt it also may diminish the effectiveness of the cool shot.

She suggests holding each section of hair with your hand after you remove the wand, like you would with a curling iron, to help the curl retain its shape. Butler also liked that the barrels are an inch longer than most other tools she tried, "which means you can create looser spiral curls or curl longer hair."

    Cons
    • 11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (64)Doesn't utilize the same curling effect as Dyson

A long-time player in the hair drying and styling game, Conair recently introduced their newest multi-tasking hot air styler, which dries and styles hair using ceramic technology to evenly distribute heat. Plus, it maxes out at 248ºF, which is significantly lower than many hot tools.

While this chic tool comes with four attachments, three heat settings and two speed settings, it differs from the Dyson as it uses different technology: the curler does not use the coanda effect. "It works more like a regular curling iron with a clamp," explains Butler. "However, it uses hot air instead of hot metal, so it doesn’t get as hot and is gentler on hair."

TESTER NOTES: "I recommend curling the hair around the barrel while it is off, then turning it on, otherwise it will blow your hair all over the place," says Butler. "It’s not as fancy as a Coanda tool, but it's affordable and versatile." Butler suggests this tool as a good choice for those who like regular curling irons but want to try a lower heat option.

Another more budget-friendly find, Ella Bella's Air Styler kit comes with six different attachments, allowing you to create numerous types of looks and styles easily. It has ceramic coated metal curling barrels that may retain heat more than the plastic ones that Dyson uses, which Butler notes as a main difference between the two, but does utilize the same auto wrap Coanda effect to curl hair.

TESTER NOTES: "I like that this tool comes with three styling brushes so you have plenty of options," says Butler. "I also really love the case it comes in — it has molded cups and elastic straps for every piece allowing everything to fit perfectly into place so you don’t have to fuss with fitting the pieces back in, which I often do with the Dyson's attachments."

Most Dyson dupes come with left and right barrels to swap when doing different sides of your head. This styler from FHI Heat is the only Dyson dupe that Butler has seen with the same direction-switching barrels as the latest Airwrap. "Instead of having left and right barrels, one barrel can be twisted and curl hair both ways," she explains. It has a super lightweight base and like the Airwrap, comes with six attachments but at a significantly lower price point. It also includes a lock button, cool shot, four heat settings and three speed settings.

TESTER NOTES: Butler loves that the tool has two different diameters of barrels for different curl size and that it includes a close dupe for the Dyson flyaway attachment. "The design of the tool is very luxe, and the attachments click into place so nicely," she says. Her only complaint: "the direction-switching pieces are a bit difficult to turn."

How we test hair styling tools

11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (77)

The GH Beauty Lab tests hundreds of hair tools (including blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons) and assesses many factors for each, including the ease of use of controls, directions, the manual and safety features such as automatic shut-off.

For certain categories, we also recruit a consumer panel, with a variety of hair lengths, textures and densities who will use the stylers as intended and will then fill out a detailed survey. Depending on the study we use anywhere between five to 10 testers per product.

For the latest review of Dyson dupes, we tried out each new device in the Lab. We looked at the variety of attachments, type of materials, hot and cold air settings, and length and diameter of curling wands and round brushes for each model. We also styled our own hair to see what kind of curls we could achieve with the curling wands.

      What to look for

11 More Affordable Alternatives to the Dyson Airwrap (80)

Finding a styler that has all the functionality of the Airwrap can be difficult but you can replicate the results in different ways.

✔️ We advise shoppers to think about the style(s) that they would like to achieve and perhaps consider investing in several tools that collectively will cover the range that the Airwrap can handle. Meaning if you typically wear your hair straight, a smoothing blow dry brush would do the trick. Or if you go back and forth between curly and straight, a blowdry brush and curling iron are great options.

✔️ Consumers can also look into refurbished Airwraps and find out if they come in with a warranty. Some of our staffers have had the original model for over five years, and they're still going strong.
